Broadway-bound Buch

By Jim Bucher

I just departed from the Victoria Theatre Association’s 2016-17 season announcement feeling excited and pumped on the lineup.

But before the schedule is shared here, I thought I’d tell a few tales about season announcements from the past.

My association with the Victoria Theatre dates back to the early ’90s. (That’s not 1890, either—I know what you’re thinking.) Before that, my great uncle was stage manager at the old State Theatre on Ludlow, which is now the site of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

I guess performing and acting are in my blood—but I digress.

For years, I’d promote the Victoria’s upcoming Broadway season. Now, I’m giving away a few tricks of the trade.

For a few years, I’d travel along with some of the Victoria staff to New York, New York. The city so nice they named it twice! We’d hit Broadway shows, and I recorded news stories to air back here in Dayton the week each show played here. So, two days and three nights in the Big Apple appeared to viewers like I was there every day for months. Just a quick on camera change of jacket and tie to fool our audience.

In those days, I shot my own footage and stood in front of the camera for reporter stand-ups with Times Square as my backdrop. We called it a ‘one-man band.’

Today, it has a more professional name—MMJ, Multi Media Journalist. It’s a way for TV news higher ups to save money. Don’t need a photographer and reporter, just a one-man … Oops, I mean an MMJ. Actually, the inventor of the flip viewfinder on a camera made this possible, and put some photographers out of business. But I’m drifting again.

So, I was provided footage of each show and would tie it in with my on camera stand-ups.  Occasionally, we’d get a Broadway star for an interview with the highlight being a sit-down chat with Broadway mega producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh, responsible for some of the biggest blockbusters ever—productions including Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables to name a few. He’s a wonderful gentleman with a wicked sense of humor. As soon as we met, I knew he was in for some fun.

While shooting a video tease—a little piece that airs before the commercial so people will stay tuned to the upcoming news story—I pretended to have one of Mackintosh’s Tony Awards under my jacket. He notices and I reply, “How’d that get in there?” It was classic.

Another cool thing is in between interviews, stand-ups and general footage of Times Square, this was also the week of the Broadway League’s annual conference.

The league represents over 700 theatres, producers and presenters around the country, of which the Victoria Theatre Association is a member. (Man, can they throw a party!) It was awesome and enlightening to experience everything involved in bringing the best of Broadway here at home.

And speaking of, here is the 2016-17 Premier Health Broadway series.

Jersey Boys, October 18-23, 2016

42nd Street, January 10-15, 2017

Dirty Dancing, March 14-19, 2017

Motown the Musical, April 11-16, 2017

Kinky Boots, May 23-28, 2017

Circus 1903, June 13-18, 2017

So, there you have it—some stories from a news guy in New York City.

Hey Victoria staff, when’s our next return trip? Broadway is calling my name!

Cheers and break a leg.
