Nuclear war must remain unthinkable

By Mark Luedtke

Thank Putin. Again. Just a couple of years ago Russian President Putin saved President Obama from outright invading Syria à la Iraq, a move that would have killed many more Americans and Syrians than are already dying in that undeclared and unconstitutional war.

Putin recently announced the development of new weapon systems that, hopefully, will prevent nuclear war.

War correspondent Eric Margolis explains, “Russia’s new arms include the RS-28 heavy ICBM, called ‘Satan 2’ by NATO. This big brute of a liquid fueled missile can carry up to ten nuclear warheads over 10,000 km (6,000 miles). What makes it very different from other ICBM’s is its ability (Russia claims) to carry nuclear-armed hypersonic vehicles through low earth orbit that can attack North America from multiple directions unseen by the radars of anti-missile systems.”

Another of the five systems announced by Putin is an undetectable, nuclear-powered, underwater drone that can detonate a nuke in every American harbor and under every US naval fleet.

US intelligence agencies failed to warn of these developments.

Only in the upside-down world created by our rulers would Russia’s development of new weapons capable of destroying civilization be something to be thankful for. Margolis explains how this started. “In December, 2002, President George W. Bush proclaimed that the US would unilaterally pull out of the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty that had curtailed the development of nuclear missiles and anti-missile systems to defeat them,” he notes.

Critics and Russian rulers warned US withdrawal from the treaty would start a new nuclear arms race, but arrogant and power-hungry US rulers didn’t listen. Russian rulers have been trying to get US rulers to agree to a new treaty since, but US rulers didn’t listen to that either.

That’s because they claimed their missile defense system would shield us from Russian nukes, and Russia, because it was so poor compared to the US, couldn’t afford to compete. As with most things rulers claim, that was wrong. The Russians developed cheaper yet superior weapons, and Business Insider reports, “The US has spent more than $40 billion on missile defense projects over the last 15 years and has no real credible capability to show for it.”

Oops. Once again our rulers have stolen billions from us to make us less safe.

But there’s another even more terrible reason US rulers broke the nuclear treaty with Russia. Washington insider Paul Craig Roberts warned in 2014, “Washington thinks nuclear war can be won and is planning for a first strike on Russia, and perhaps China, in order to prevent any challenge to Washington’s world hegemony.

“The plan is far advanced, and the implementation of the plan is underway. As I have reported previously, US strategic doctrine was changed and the role of nuclear missiles was elevated from a retaliatory role to an offensive first strike role. US anti-ballistic missile (ABM) bases have been established in Poland on Russia’s frontier, and other bases are planned. When completed Russia will be ringed with US missile bases.

“Anti-ballistic missiles, known as ‘star wars,’ are weapons designed to intercept and destroy ICBMs. In Washington’s war doctrine, the US hits Russia with a first strike, and whatever retaliatory force Russia might have remaining is prevented from reaching the US by the shield of ABMs.”

In upside-down world, Russian rulers protect us from the insanity of ours. Because our rulers refuse negotiation and cooperation, we’re back to depending on the Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) doctrine of the Cold War to keep us alive.

Putin’s announcement was part of a campaign speech, but Margolis notes, “Maybe Putin was boasting and exaggerating, but he usually tells the truth, unlike our politicians, and rarely embellishes.”

Pat Buchanan advises ending aggression against Russia. “Japan negotiates with Putin’s Russia over the southern Kuril Islands lost at the end of World War II. Bibi Netanyahu has met many times with Putin, though he is an ally of Assad, whom Bibi would like to see ousted, and has a naval and air base not far from Israel’s border.

“We Americans have far more fish to fry with Russia than Bibi. Strategic arms control. De-escalation in the Baltic, Ukraine and the Black Sea. Ending the war in Syria. North Korea. Space. Afghanistan. The Arctic. The war on terror.”

All Soviet rulers were dictators, and ours wisely negotiated with them. Let’s hope ours listen now and remember nuclear war must remain unthinkable. Negotiation, treaties, and peace are the only options we can live with. Literally.
