Critic’s Pick – Patrik, Age 1.5

Patrik, Age 1.5 screened at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and attracted attention for its smart, funny take on gay adoption and homophobia. Goran (Gustaf Skarsgard) and Sven (Torkel Petersson), a Swedish couple, anxiously await the arrival of their 15-month old adoptee, but are shocked to find Patrik (Thomas Ljungman), a 15-year old homophobic delinquent on their doorstep. While audiences can likely imagine the hijinks that will develop from such a premise, it says something that such a story can now stand on the verge of breaking out of its indie sub-culture into the mainstream. It is only a matter of time before Hollywood sets its sights on a U.S. remake produced by Judd Apatow featuring Jason Segal and Paul Rudd. The Dayton Pride Partnership, in coordination with the Downtown Dayton LGBT Film Festival, will screen Patrik, Age 1.5 Thursday, June 17 at 7 and 9:40 p.m. at the Neon Movies, 130 E. Fifth St. A Q&A session regarding gay adoption, consisting of a panel of adoption professionals from Montgomery County Children’s Services and gay adoptive parents from Centerville, will take place following the 7 p.m. screening. Tickets cost $6 and are available at the Neon box office.
