The problem is that we think that we are helping these people when in fact we are enabling their bad habit. Would you give an alcoholic a drink, a drug addict a syringe?? I hope my freedoms don't come down to hypothetical preemptive speculations such as these. But, like the author, I'm a fairly well-off white male adult, so I'm probably safe and secure from such government intrusions. Unlike the author, I care enough about the plight of those hard hit in these economic times not to make their lives even harder with callous policies.
