Basically, a few people owned a lot of slaves and most people didn't own slaves because they couldn't afford them (abolition of slave trade means the price of slaves increases). Furthermore, if slavery wasn't what the war was about, then why is the right to own slaves the only difference between the Confederate and Union constitutions? That tells you what was on the minds of the southerners who made the decision to secede.
