Joey Belladonna at McGuffy’s House of Rock

Joey Belladonna

For those of you who may not recognize the name, Joey Belladonna is the lead singer of legendary Grammy-nominated thrash metal group Anthrax, who has been enjoying a recent wave of relevancy due to the overwhelming success of “The Big Four” concerts that Anthrax has been sharing the stage with other legendary thrash titans Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer. Over the years, Anthrax has sold over eight million albums worldwide and Belladonna’s often been considered one of the best vocalists of the genre, even being voted the #1 metal singer two years in a row by Metal Forces Magazine back in the 1980s.  But what some Anthrax fans might not be aware of is Belladonna‘s ongoing solo career away from the band that made him famous. He’s been working on solo material since the mid-90s, and this coming Saturday, will be bringing his solo act, aptly named Belladonna, to McGuffy’s House of Rock, located at 5418 Burkhardt Road in Dayton. Doors open at 7 p.m., music begins at 8 p.m. Opening acts Dying to Meet You and Shattered Tragedy will start the festivities. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 day of show.  For more information, call (937) 256-3005.

There was a small, but energetic, turnout for this show, which was one of the very best I have seen in recent years. And ego-free affair dedicated truly to the love of hard rock and heavy metal, Joey Belladonna and the band interacted with each and every fan prior to the show and this felt like family from the first note. With a set chock-full of Anthrax classics and some great tributes to Ronnie James Dio (as well as one hell of a heavy metal medley totally off-the-cuff based on fans’ t-shirts), this was a genuine treat for fans of MUSIC as opposed to any trend or scene. Fabulous.
