I am not sure from this interview what Commissioner Whaley has done in the past 7 years or plans to do if elected mayor. The Oregon District is but a thin slice of the pie. Travel down any main street in Dayton and you'll see business after business closed. Buildings falling down up & down Main St. with businesses closing, Houses empty and boarded up. People are leaving. Also having a downtown for festivals only, is not keeping any regular business open downtown. I don't doubt she cares, but simply caring does not change a thing. So I want to know WHAT SHE PLANS TO DO. Not excuses.

About 6 years ago, Commissioner Whaley responded to requests from the Oregon District Business Association; she (of all the commissioners invited) listened. She attended meetings, supported planning efforts, and assisted the businesses in growing the area. With her support, the Oregon District is returning as the vibrant center of downtown arts and entertainment. She has vision, and follow through. She has demonstrated that she genuinely cares about the survival of small independent businesses in this city. Thank you, Nan Whaley.

This article really does not provide any real meat about Whaley. Tim Riordan, City Manager, is much more responsible for the nuisance building program. The bike lane program may look good on paper, but as a downtown resident, I am waiting to see actual use or benefit of it. Whaley's statement about needing jobs downtown is a typical politician generalization to a very specific need. We need businesses and residences downtown. Jobs are the result. The Austin Road and the Greene developments which have poached opportunities away from Dayton have both happened on her watch as a City Commissioner. Whaley is a Democrat with stepping stone ambition as a career politician (see her blog). I would prefer to have a Mayor who actually can make some progress on Dayton issues and will be the kind of aggressive advocate the city needs.
