White Horses

Described by one ardent admirer as a “hipper, younger Neko Case,” Kate Tucker is an Akron girl whose music is equal parts slow burn and honky-tonk shuffle. Born into a family of truckers, her work is influenced by the American road with themes of departure, distance, love lost and rebirth. Tucker’s songs move from molasses-heavy rock to elegant, haunting ballads borne on the wings of her fragile, but insistent voice.

Her latest record, White Horses (released in 2010), is a departure of sorts in that Tucker broke with her backing band – The Sons of Sweden – to work as a solo artist. Produced by Blake Wescott (Pedro The Lion, Damien Jurado) White Horses features an all-star cast of Seattle musicians, including Casey Foubert on drums and guitars (Sufjan Stevens, Rocky Votolato).

I’d like to tell you that I was one of the first to discover Kate Tucker, but if you must know the truth I found her via Facebook somewhat after the fact (I was as shocked as you are). I immediately sent an email to her referencing the influence of Mazzy Star and Cowboy Junkies, she invited me to her new video release show at Musica in Akron, and the rest is history.

So while it appears that I’m a late arrival on the Kate Tucker fanboy bandwagon, that’s fine by me. When she’s a household name I can still show my friends the emails and photos and tell them how I knew her way back when.
