How and Where to Spend Your Urban Nights

By Maha Kashani

Would you believe me if I told you that Dayton is one of the trendiest, most cultured and affordable places to live? If your answer is no, then chances are you have yet to experience Urban Nights.

Most of us have heard the expression “there is nothing to do in Dayton.” It is very likely you also heard that someone from Forbes, who I presume never stepped foot inside the Miami Valley, decided to tell the world that our town was dying and everyone is miserable. If you agree with that expression or believe Forbes, then I invite you to come to downtown Dayton on Friday, May 11th for our city to prove you wrong.

What is Urban Nights?

Simply put, a free family-friendly, citywide block party spanning all of downtown, the Oregon Arts District and Wright-Dunbar Village, showcasing our urban core as the premier place to live, work and play. Twice a year in the spring and fall, the Downtown Dayton Partnership plays host to more than 30,000 people who will take to the vibrant streets of Dayton in this highly anticipated celebration.

What is there to do?

That’s a loaded question! To give you a snapshot, you can:

Enjoy eclectic and local art by visiting one of the 16 galleries hosting an open house, such as the Color of Energy, K12 Gallery for Young People, the Dayton Visual Arts Center and Garden Station Art Park.

Explore creative spaces around the city such as the The Old Courthouse, Wright Brothers Bicycle Shop, Urban Krag Climbing Center or Drake’s Downtown Gym, an old-school boxing gym.

Experience live performances and special events at six different venues around the city such as the Main Stage at Courthouse Square, Live on Five in the Oregon District, Wright-Dunbar Entertainment in the Wright Dunbar Business Village and, of course, our extraordinary MetroParks Pavilion.

Interact by participating in different fun and collaborative activities such as the Green Street Project, which I will explain a little later, karaoke on the Community Stage at Second and Jefferson, or if you are brave enough you can Challenge a Chess Pro at the Dayton Chess Club.

Imagine yourself living a stylish urban lifestyle by touring some of downtown’s lofts and condos. I highly recommend checking out The Cannery Lofts, which will feature a two bedroom with exposed brick for visitors to catch a glimpse of downtown living at its finest.

Shop at one-of-a-kind locally owned retail stores and pick up some cool swag like authentic British tea and trinkets at Basically British, trendy custom designed shirts at Basho Apparel, environmentally friendly fair trade items at Peace on 5th and gift items all made in America at the new American π (Pi).

Hungry yet?

Discover exceptional dining options that will excite your palate at one of more than twenty restaurants offering special discounts including $5 appetizers at Coco’s Bistro, half-price gourmet pizza at Oregon Express, twenty percent off food at Dublin Pub and happy hour pricing all night long at De’Lish. Or, enjoy a bird’s eye view of all the action while nibbling on free hor d’oeuvres (for bar guests) at the Crowne Plaza’s rooftop restaurant and lounge.

Ready for a beverage?

In addition to great dining specials, downtown’s coffee shops and watering holes are offering specials paired with unique experiences. Press, arguably the coolest coffee shop ever, will host a special brewing exhibition, Century Bar is featuring an exhibition of sculptures you can view while sipping on one of over 60 bourbon options and Deaf Monty’s Wine at Inn Port D’Vino is offering $2 wine tastings.

Not satisfied?

Also, if cycling your thing, then join hundreds of fellow enthusiasts for Urban Bikes @ Urban Nights, a tour around downtown allowing you the luxury to preview all of the festivities from the seat of your bike!

As if all of these options aren’t enough to keep you entertained, this spring’s Urban Nights will also feature the Green Street Project. Main Street will shut down between Second and Third Streets for a series of activities designed to celebrate all things “green” and promote creating a sustainable environment. The special Green Street Project will feature: educational booths and fun activities, such as trashcan basketball, to promote “going green” hosted by the Dayton Regional Green 3 Initiative (DRG3), a large community art mural-making project led by the Dayton Art Institute, using recyclable materials for attendees to make their mark, Segway rides courtesy of Dayton Segway Tours, Zoot Theatre Company demonstrations and an opportunity to create masks from recycled materials, photos in the open-air Liftoff Entertainment Photo Booth, eco-friendly vehicles on display, Broadway musical Wicked-inspired activities and much, much more. The list could go on forever.

Yes, I was serious when I said this is only a snapshot. I haven’t even scratched the surface. But don’t worry, that’s why this is a bi-annual event!

So if you really think there is nothing to do in Dayton, then make sure you are downtown on Friday May 11th from 5p.m. – 10p.m. to experience firsthand all the exceptional things that make Dayton a remarkable community.

(With over 100 unique opportunities to enjoy, explore, experience, interact, imagine, shop and discover downtown Dayton, it is easy to get overwhelmed. I recommend visiting www.DowntownDayton.org and downloading the event and program map to plan out your fun-filled evening.)

Generation Dayton Collaborates, Celebrates GenD Day

By Maha Kashani

You may have heard of Generation Dayton (GenD) and wondered what exactly it is. The answer: it’s our community’s premier association for young professionals who live, work and play in the Dayton region. Let’s take a step back to better understand what this organization is all about.

Almost a decade ago, a handful of innovative young Daytonians noticed that most networking organizations were made up of tenured professionals twice their age. They identified a void for young professionals in the business community who wanted to network with their peers in a social or community service-oriented environment. Their efforts came to fruition with their concept for the Dayton Young Professionals Association, known as “DYPA.” Word spread that there was a new organization in town providing young professionals the opportunity to engage with each other outside of the traditional bar scene, and the group exploded.

DYPA quickly grew to a capacity that the founding officers, Matt Schmitz, Patrick Koons, Matt Byrd, Jeff Stickel and Nick Ruszkowski, could no longer manage on their own. Around the same time, Dayton identified the difficult challenge of brain drain, and its effect on the area. The region was producing top-notch talent, yet these bright and promising young professionals were leaving for what they thought were greener pastures. The Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce realized the need for an organization to assist with attracting and retaining future leaders of the region, which was exactly what DYPA was beginning to accomplish. The organizations were a perfect match for each other.

On May 4, 2006, Generation Dayton officially launched itself at Therapy Cafe. I remember that day so clearly … wow … how time flies.

This new and improved organization was formed, under the leadership of a volunteer Steering Committee and the Chamber, to create programs for professionals between the ages of 21 and 40 to meet new friends, network, learn about the region, grow personally and establish themselves amongst others who wanted to become an integral component in the future success of the Dayton region.

Keeping to the founding principles of giving young talent an opportunity to interact in a social and community service-oriented fashion, GenD Day was created to celebrate the organization’s anniversary. The official title of GenD Day: Get Out, Give Back Dayton!

Each year, on the afternoon of the first Friday in May, Dayton’s young professionals “get out” and “give back” to our community. 2011 marked GenD’s five-year anniversary, with over 130 young professional volunteers around the city sporting t-shirts that read “Dayton Rocks.” Collectively, 500 hours of time and talent benefited more than twenty non-profit agencies. The hours donated translated to a $10,000 impact on the community. Talk about a feel-good Friday afternoon!

In 2012, GenD Day is anticipated to be even bigger and better. Kicking off with a free lunch provided by Chick-fil-a, City of Dayton Mayor Leitzell will join the crowd and present a proclamation officially declaring May 4th as Generation Dayton Day in the city, and then volunteers will head out to their respective assignments. Scores of non-profit organizations around town are eagerly anticipating an afternoon spent with young, enthusiastic volunteers. There are a slew of projects available to work on, including but not limited to:

— Catholic Social Services: Planting flowers and bushes
— Crayons to Classrooms: Sorting/organizing school supplies
— Dayton Visual Arts Center (led by yours truly!): Painting, reorganizing, hanging art
— Downtown Dayton Partnership: Promoting Urban Nights
— Habitat for Humanity: Indoor and outdoor building projects
— Hannah’s Treasure Chest: Assisting with garage sale
— Humane Society: Walking dogs, socializing with cats, Furry Scurry assistance
— Garden Station: Building and filling garden beds, planting flowers
— Ronald McDonald House: Cooking hot meals and baking cookies
— United Rehabilitation Services: Working with adult and youth clients
— We Care Arts: Potting plants and yard work.

GenD Day is all about getting young professionals out into our community, but we also know it is important to reward our volunteers by giving them an opportunity to get down after an afternoon of giving back. What better reward than an after-party to enjoy some free food and drinks while sharing experiences and accomplishments from the day?

The official after-hours celebration will be held at The Vault from 5:30p.m. – 8p.m. Not everyone will be able to participate in the service portion of GenD Day, but all young professionals are still invited to attend the after-party for an opportunity to meet new friends and celebrate the 6th anniversary Generation Dayton!

(The 6th Annual “Get out, Give Back Dayton” Generation Dayton Day is on Friday May 4th. From noon – 1p.m., check-in and have lunch at the Excelsior Building at 207 E. 6th St. From 1 – 5p.m. there will be volunteer opportunities, and the after-hours celebration is at The Vault, 20 North Jefferson Street, from 5:30 – 8p.m. To sign up for “Get Out, Give Back Dayton!” on Generation Dayton Day or for more information contact LaDonna Wulfeck at lwulfeck@dacc.org or call (937) 226-8264.)

By Maha Kashani

Summer … It’s so close! We’ve had a few teaser days so far this year, but not enough for me to re-introduce my white shoes and purses to society. They are patiently waiting alongside my bathing suits to emerge onto the scene and officially see their first light of a 2012 summer day.

Much to my delight, we’ve had a mild winter. I hope that means we will have a long, hot summer. I know Mother Nature has the tendency to be moody, but my glass is half full! While we all patiently await the luxury of laying poolside during the warm summer days ahead, May offers some exciting options to keep us busy in the interim.

Did you know? On September 8th & 9th, the first-ever Downtown Dayton Revival Music Festival will take over the city! This Fall, it’s all about “Rock, Roll & Dayton Soul” as the streets of downtown Dayton are transformed into a unique music venue featuring three stages to showcase chart-topping artists like John Legend, Train and Dayton’s own Guided by Voices. Think Lollapalooza, on a smaller scale, in Downtown Dayton. Matt Luongo, President of Downtown Revival LLC, is a genius! With so many fantastic things happening in our city, how can you not be excited? To learn more and purchase tickets, visit www.downtownrevival.com.

By Maha Kashani

Well, it finally happened. I turned 29, which means I am now less than 1 year away from being 30, which means … Um … what does that mean? I guess I’m not sure, but what I can say is that I’ve had a blast in my 20s and am looking forward to making my last 12 months as a 20-something count!

Spring brings many changes, and this Spring was no exception. In addition to turning almost 30 and ringing in the Persian New Year of 1391, I started a new career. I am very excited to announce that I am the newest Sr. Account Manager at DPL Energy Resources, a Competitive Retail Electric Service provider. This is a huge change, yet fantastic opportunity for me, and I very much look forward to the road ahead! Another year of wisdom gained and a new life chapter has begun. This aging thing isn’t too bad, I guess …

Enough about me! Let’s talk about ways that you can stay entertained in April.

Did you know? Daytonians are always trailblazing, even in the wonderful world of yoga. Musician Ben Rivet and Yoga Instructor Tori Reynolds have teamed up to create a unique pairing of yoga with live music called GO W/ THE FLOW. Their creation of a special Vinyasa experience features acoustic guitar and beat boxing to direct your mind, body and senses into harmony, all while the beat guides your breath. This dynamic duo’s concept was a hit at the famous South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, and they have started touring yoga studios all over the nation. You can experience this one-of-a-kind class on Fridays at 5:45p.m. at Practice Yoga on 5th in the Oregon District. Make sure you register online, these classes fill up quick! www.PracticeYogaDayton.com

Miss Maha’s “Best Bets”

— Explore Downtown Dayton:

First Friday Art Hop, Friday the 6th from 5p.m. – 10p.m. around downtown Dayton.
Downtown Dayton is the region’s playground on the First Friday of every month, and April is no exception. Stop by Mike Elsass’ Color of Energy Gallery for the opening reception for Of Man and Metal. While you’re there, take a peak at AMORE Designer Consignment’s boutique featuring a trunk show with unique furniture by Chairy Blossom. Then swing by Press, named one of Zagat’s top 10 coolest independent coffee shops, before heading to Basho Apparel for live music and the debut of their new guest artist’s clothing pieces. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, stop by Oregon Express for half-priced pizzas until 8p.m. or Lucky’s Taproom for dinner specials and craft beer. For a full list of activities, visit www.DowntownDayton.org.
Cost: Free!

— Meet Young Professionals:

5 for the Kids: Get Behind The Bar — Thursday the 12th from 5:30p.m. to 8:30p.m. at Brixx Ice Co.
Generation Dayton gets behind the bar to take on the Young Lawyers Division for this spirited, all-out, no-holds-barred battle of the bartenders benefitting CARE House. Support members of both groups, yours truly included, as we serve up cocktails to see which YP organization can raise the most money in tips for a great cause. As a saleswoman, my signature drink is appropriately titled “The Closer”. Come out to have some fun and meet new friends while helping us raise money to support this local advocacy center providing services to victims of child abuse. www.GenerationDayton.org.
Cost: Free, but make sure to bring cash for tips!

— Experience Arts and Culture:

Dayton Art/Pub Crawl, Thursday the 19th from 5:30p.m. – 10:30p.m., beginning at DVAC.
JumpstART always hosts creative ways to tap our generation into the vibrant local arts scene. This unique bar crawl that covers three city blocks is no exception. Crawlers will start at the Dayton Visual Arts Center (DVAC) and make stops at Century Bar Bourbon House, the H. David Clay Studio and CADC on St. Clair before wrapping up the evening at Club Vault on Jefferson. Each gallery will have complimentary food and drinks, the bars will offer great specials and, as always, fantastic raffle prizes are up for grabs. www.Facebook.com/DaytonJumpstART.
She now takes the stage portraying how she became the life of the party in this hilarious and sobering look at her Hollywood hangover. Get ready for a vivid evening of what Fisher calls “talking about myself behind my back,” with one-liners and behind-the-Hollywood-scenes-gossip, all relayed through Fisher’s brut-dry humor. This will be a fun show for all. www.VictoriaTheatre.com.

Dublin Pub and Flanagan’s Pub Carry On Tradition

By Maha Kashani

“Kiss me, I’m Irish!” Ok fine, I’m actually Persian, but on March 17th thousands will join me in forgetting our true heritage and adopt a faux Irish ancestry to pay homage to Saint Patrick.

Of all the holidays that we observe, St. Patrick’s Day might be one of the most unusual. Think about it, we’re celebrating the patron saint of Ireland who we don’t really know much about. Stranger still, a tradition has been formed to wear green while indulging in vast quantities of traditional Irish beverages to honor this mystifying Saint. Then, somewhere along the line, someone decided that the appropriate punishment for those not wearing green should be delivered in the form of pinches.

When you put it all together, it’s a bizarre holiday tradition. Which is probably why Americans have embraced it since the beginning. Actually, since before the beginning. The first St. Patrick’s Day celebrations held on American soil predate the Declaration of Independence!

Although only 11% of Americans are Irish, when St. Patrick’s Day rolls around that number seems to shoot up. With as much fun as this holiday holds, who can blame us for wishing our last names began with an “O”?

Luckily, you don’t need to travel all the way to the Emerald Isle to get your kicks. If you’re ready to experience that famous “luck of the Irish,” then downtown Dayton’s double-header is your pot o’ gold.

Every year, Dublin Pub in the historic Oregon District and Flanagan’s Pub near the University of Dayton collaborate to create Ohio’s largest St. Patrick’s Day experience, featuring some of the best entertainment in town. You won’t find green beer in Ireland, so don’t expect to see any between these two establishments. What you can expect with this year’s holiday landing on a Saturday is an estimated 20,000 green-clad revelers between these two venues, solidifying Dayton as the ultimate St. Patrick’s Day destination.

Dublin Pub, who holds the record as Ohio’s #1 Irish Whiskey pourer, hosts a two day long celebration. The three tents will be set up on Friday, so what better excuse to begin one’s festivities a day early? The party starts at noon and leads to their headlining concert that evening, The Prodigals. Cleveland House of Blues’ St Patrick’s Day headliner is making a special trip down to help Dub Pub commence their celebrations. On Saturday they will shut down Wayne Ave and open their doors at 5a.m. to kick-off a 100% authentic Irish affair. All day long, you will find perfect pints of Guinness, Harp and Smithwick’s, Jamison Irish Whiskey flowing freely, and traditional Irish bands, dancers and musicians buzzing all day long. The kitchen opens at 5:30a.m., so my personal recommendation is to place an order of their award winning Pub Fries to ensure you can last into the evening!

Flanagan’s Pub once again teams up with George Killian’s Irish Red and WTUE to present their famous St. PatROCKS Party, making this year their 36th year of paying homage to Saint Patrick, with doors opening at 9a.m. Inside this huge tent, you will find several vendor booths selling the most eye-catching St. Patrick’s Day flair available, a live radio remote, pints of Irish beer served at the perfect temperature as well as wine, liquor and pub food, all at great prices in a casual festival style atmosphere.

Each venue will feature a large stage with exclusive entertainment options, including headliners like The Menus, one of Ohio’s most sought-out cover bands, and Homeland, a “first of its kind” Celtic-infused rock band, blowing the tops off their tents.

Although these parties technically operate independently of each other, they come together by offering a free shuttle service running every 20 minutes from 10a.m. until midnight, encouraging partygoers to visit both venues and ensuring they have the ultimate St. Patrick’s Day experience.

“Dublin Pub and Flanagan’s Pub spill more beer than the others sell. We are the party!!” said Flanagan’s Pub owner Pat Flanagan. “There is a great synergy between the two places,” added Dublin Pub owner Steve Tieber, who refers to his counterpart Flanagan as Dayton’s “Godfather of St. Patrick’s Day.”

Combined, they project clearing as many as 400 barrels of beer and over 200 bottles of whiskey, securing Dayton as Ohio’s #1 seller of Guinness and Jamison Irish Whiskey on St. Patrick’s Day. “The goal is for Dayton to be a tourist destination for St. Patrick’s Day,” said Tieber. If these two establishments can pull in their estimated 20,000 partygoers to the city, I think we can all say “Mission Accomplished.”

If you are going to be Irish, even for this one day, then make Dayton your destination. That said, safety should always come first. Do not drink and drive! A special rate of $94 a night has been negotiated for March 16th and 17th at The Crowne Plaza hotel in downtown Dayton, with complimentary transportation to and from the The Dublin Pub. Call 937-224-0800 to book your room.

Dublin Pub is located at 300 Wayne Ave. Admission is $10 for a 2 Day Pass. No cover charge Friday until 6p.m. www.DubPub.com and Flanagan’s Pub is located at 101 E. Stewart Street. Admission is $10, pay an extra $5 for an all day “In/Out” pass. www.flanaganspubdayton.com.

NCAA March Madness Kicks Off In Dayton

By Maha Kashani

It’s almost that time of year when it seems as though everyone comes down with a case of Spring’s most popular catching disease, caused by one of the world’s most-watched sporting events: March Madness Fever. Who would have ever thought that the cobblestone streets of the historic Oregon District would serve as the catalyst for this epidemic in 2012?

Bragging rights are once again up for grabs in this high profile NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball tournament to determine a national champion, and the road starts here as Dayton once again prepares to host the First Four games on March 13 and 14 at the University of Dayton Arena.

The University of Dayton has kicked off March Madness — also known as the “Big Dance” — each year since 2001, having hosted a single opening-round game from 2001-10. Once the tournament was expanded to 68 teams in 2011, Dayton was selected as host city for the inaugural First Four, consisting of four first-round games played over the course of two days. Last year, Dayton was the launching pad for Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), as they began their journey at the University of Dayton Arena and made it all the way to the Final Four (A true Cinderella story).

Given the first-class job University of Dayton Arena has done as host for more NCAA tournament games than any other venue in the country, it comes as no surprise that we have again been selected to host the First Four in 2012.

NCAA spokesman Greg Shaheen referred to the event as “one of the most respected venues in all of college basketball,” and the University of Dayton Arena has helped put Dayton back on a national stage by hosting. New this year, the First Four is expanding beyond the Arena and making its play for a unique experience in downtown Dayton.

Introducing the First Four Festival

What is the First Four Festival? This all-day celebration of college basketball is a family-friendly street party that will serve as the first-ever official kickoff to March Madness, taking place in downtown Dayton’s historic Oregon District! The NCAA’s First Four Local Organizing Committee has partnered up with the City of Dayton, University of Dayton, Wright State University and Wright Patterson Air Force Base to host this first-of-its-kind Selection Sunday Celebration.

Next week, some 37 million co-workers, basketball fans and non-basketball fans alike will be infected with March Madness Fever as this NCAA basketball tournament tips-off for a three week thrill. Many Americans will unite by joining an office betting pool. For those of us so lucky to be in Dayton, we have the exclusive opportunity to unite and experience something epic.

Tournaments rarely commence to celebrate their launch, but thanks to a highly creative and innovative local organizing committee, we are making history here in Dayton.

On Selection Sunday, March 11, downtown Dayton will be one of the nation’s hottest destinations as the Oregon District plays host to a street party like no other. Thousands will flock to the city for this unprecedented opportunity to paint the town red — or maybe orange, to fit the basketball theme.

Starting at noon, attendees will marvel at the U.S. Air Force’s official fly-over to kick off the day’s festivities. Guests will then be invited to explore the Oregon District and countless entertainment options that await them, including the NCAA First Four 4 Miler run around downtown Dayton, alumni “Hot Shot” Competition, 3-on-3 basketball games, live music, educational displays featuring the latest in Air Force technology, jumbotrons playing conference tournament championship games, the Selection Sunday Show, food, beverages and much more.

Rain or shine, the First Four Festival will block off the famous cobblestoned 5th Street corridor from Patterson Blvd. to Wayne Avenue. In addition to the street festival and a courtside club, there will be three main zones featured inside heated tents.

Getting in the zone

Sports & Entertainment Zone: This ultimate party atmosphere will feature various entertainment, live music, a local sports show broadcast, bracket contest and even an interactive ESPN Game Day-style booth, hosted by local celebrities where attendees can experience what it’s like to be reporting live from behind the sports desk.

Family Fun & Education Zone: This family-friendly atmosphere will host children’s activities, interactive displays, fun games and lots of great give-aways. Let your kids burn off some energy while you enjoy a bite to eat and an ice-cold beverage.

U.S. Air Force Experience Zone: This will be by far the most exciting atmosphere, with educational displays featuring the latest in Air Force Technology, a flight simulator, Tech exhibits and the much-anticipated “Hot Shot” Competition.

A few major highlights include:

NCAA First Four 4 Miler: Sign up to join the Miami Valley River Runners and 1000 expected participants for a trot through downtown Dayton, finishing in the Oregon District at the Festival. Advanced registration recommended, visit: www.firstfour.daytonflyers.com/festival.html to sign up. Cost: $25. Includes t-shirt.

“Hot Shot” Competition: Featuring alumni from the University of Dayton, Wright State University and the Air Force Academy, this thrilling “Hot Shot” Competition is a can’t miss.

Live Musical Entertainment: Once Selection Sunday concludes and everyone has their brackets to buzz about, it’s time for the real party to begin. Head over to the Main Stage to enjoy some live music and get your groove on with local bands playing live.

In addition to being one of the coolest things to ever happen in town, this is a big deal for our local economy. County Commissioner Judy Dodge emphasizes, “The economic impact is substantial for Dayton and our region.” Last year’s First Four had an approximately 4 million dollar economic impact on our community, even without the Festival. Making Dayton a Selection Sunday destination, in addition to the First Four games, will not only showcase our community on a national scale, but attract a lot of much-appreciated dollars to our region’s core.

Is parking a concern? Not this weekend! The city is providing free parking at the Transportation Center Garage by the Convention Center (101 E. 5th St), the City Hall Garage (123 W. 3rd St) and the Reibold Center Garage (131 S. Main St.) Or, take advantage of free parking at the University of Dayton Arena, and take their RTA shuttle to and from the event all day.

And if this isn’t enough to get you all hyped up, it is only the beginning of all the Madness! Make sure you purchase your tickets to actually see the First Four games at the University of Dayton Arena on March 13th & 14th, at 6:00p.m. and 9:00p.m. both nights. A four-pack of tickets to see all the games starts at only $80. Tickets can be purchased at: www.NCAA.com/FirstFourDayton.

To make things even more exciting, the NCAA has announced that Dayton will host the tournament’s “First Four” again in 2013 in addition to the second and third-round games of the championship, thanks to local fans who have helped the University of Dayton regularly rank among the top 30 nationally in Division I men’s basketball attendance. Plus, 2013 will be the 75th Anniversary of the NCAA, so we know everyone will be ready to celebrate. Talk about awesome!

Selection Sunday 2012 in Dayton’s Historic Oregon District will be a spectacle that you do not want to miss. From noon to 10:30p.m., downtown Dayton is the place to be for this community-wide street party full of big crowds, big-screen basketball and big-time fun for all. It’s time to show the nation that we can throw a party like nobody else.

Be proud Dayton, the Road Starts Here!

Fun Things to Do Around Dayton This Month

By Maha Kashani

Well, I survived Dayton “Knockout.” I took a few punches to the face in front of hundreds and hundreds of people, but we raised a lot of money for the Aids Resource Center of Ohio in addition to bringing some well-needed awareness to Dayton History and the beautiful historic Memorial Hall. All in all, I feel like a winner.

February was a fun month, but March has a lot more in store. Here are a few great ways for you to stay entertained.

Activated Spaces

Did you know? The Activated Spaces Project is in full swing! This joint venture between Updayton and Generation Dayton, two organizations united by a common goal to help downtown Dayton grow, has been very successful. Moving into year two, the Activated Spaces Project has given new life to vacant downtown storefronts by featuring local artist displays as well as pop-up shops that give aspiring entrepreneurs a shot at testing out their business concepts downtown. The project is currently accepting applications for new pop-up shops through March 9th, as well as art exhibits through April 2nd. Visit www.ActivatedSpaces.org to learn more.

Miss Maha’s “Best Bets”

— Explore the City:

St. Patrick’s Day Festivities, March 16 – 18th. Multiple locations around town.

Quite possibly one of the best holidays to experience in Dayton, there is no shortage of ways to celebrate St. Patty’s Day. The most notorious party happens at the Dublin Pub in the Oregon District. With doors opening at 5a.m. on St. Patty’s Day, Dub Pub features multiple tents with traditional entertainment, bands and libations flowing freely. If you need a change of scenery, jump on the free shuttle over to Flanagan’s Pub for a similar experience. If The Greene is your spot, The Pub is hosting a 3-day long celebration in honor of all things Irish. For a more cultural experience, visit the Schuster Performing Arts Center to catch the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra performing with the Celtic Vistas, featuring award winning traditional Irish vocalist Cathie Ryan on Saturday night. Also, check out the March 13th edition of the DCP for the annual Survival Guide and to learn more about the Dublin Pub/Flanagan’s celebration.

— Experience Arts and Culture:

Encore at The Phil: Music of Queen. Saturday the 10th, 3p.m. at the Schuster Performing Arts Center.

The Dayton Philharmonic’s wildly successful Rockin’ Orchestra series has been quite the treat. With the upcoming Queen performance selling out early, an additional matinee show has been added. This performance has become an Encore Event, meaning young professionals have an opportunity to enjoy the show at a discount rate. With over four decades of music and 18 number-one hits to their credit, Queen is recognized as one of the most influential British rock bands of all time. Come experience “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Radio Ga Ga,” “We Are The Champions,” “Who Wants To Live Forever” and many more favorites. This show will rock you! For more information, visit www.DaytonPhilharmonic.com/Encore. COST: $30 for young professionals. Must purchase online by March 3rd.

— Enjoy Craft Beer:

4th Annual AleFeast, Saturday the 3rd, 4p.m. – 7p.m. at the Dayton Masonic Center.

Ever since my trip to Germany in 2006, I have had an obsession with craft beers. If you share my passion, then Dayton’s 4th Annual AleFeast is your kind of event. This unique direct pairing of fine foods to complementary craft beers is a treat for connoisseurs. Featuring local restaurants, taverns, retailers and area chefs, this is an event you don’t want to miss. Purchase your tickets in advance at www.AleFest.com. Cost: $50.

— Meet an elected official:

After Hours with State Rep. Jim Butler, Thursday the 15th, 6p.m. – 7:30p.m. at the Dayton Racquet Club’s 29 Stories Lounge.

The DRC’s Emerging Executives program is excited to kick off its 2012 “Networking Up” series with a special after hours event in the spectacular 29 Stories Lounge with Ohio’s 37th District State Representative, Jim Butler.

Training for Dayton’s First V.I.P. Fight Night

By Miss Maha

When I first saw the tweet from Melissa Fowler that read: “Miss Maha, I have a unique opportunity for you to lend your celebrity to a charitable cause,” I was intrigued… “I’m recruiting celebrity contestants for a first-ever charity boxing exhibition, to be held at Memorial Hall.” Once I learned that proceeds would go toward the preservation of Dayton History in addition to the fight against HIV and AIDS, I was sold! Free gym use, personal training sessions and learning a new sport all to benefit charity is right up my alley. Plus, how hard could three 60-second bouts in a boxing match really be? Ignorance was bliss, and I signed on immediately to participate in the inaugural Dayton “Knockout” VIP Fight Night.

That evening, I had a horrifying flash back. That episode of the Kardashians where Bruce Jenner convinced the family to participate in a charity boxing match in which professional boxers beat the family to a pulp. I immediately freaked at the thought of having my butt kicked in front of thousands of people and I sent Melissa a message, obviously alarmed. Her immediate response was “We will match you up with someone of similar size, skill, etc. Don’t worry, we want it to be a fair fight.” My mind was put at ease … for the moment.

I knew about Drake’s Downtown Gym and their infamous Fight Nights. Driving by, I had noticed those fighters training inside. Talk about intimidating! When it came time for my first “hits & mitts” class, I had no idea what to expect. I was very surprised to see men and women of all ages participating in that class. It was like bootcamp. Everyone had to do pushups just because I was late (talk about starting off on the wrong foot!) and then dips, lunges around the gym, tire presses, etc. Once we were warmed up, it was time to hit the bags. I had no clue what I was doing, but it felt really good to punch something that hard. After my mitts session, the trainer pulled me aside and said “You did really well today.” Success!

Over the next few weeks of training I started to feel confident, then we learned about our match-ups. One of my best friends and fellow young professionals, advocate Shanon Potts, and I were the only two who had never boxed before. We had joked that maybe it would be best if we did fight each other … Turns out we wrote our own destiny. Although the thought of taking jabs at each other was horrifying, the thought of receiving jabs from Amelia Robinson made us both realize that this was the best decision.

The first time we sparred it was intense. I realized that those three 60 second bouts that I had thought would be so simple became the hardest 60 seconds of my life! It didn’t help that before Fight Night training, the last time I set foot inside a gym had been 18 months ago when I fell off a treadmill. I definitely needed to work on my cardio and endurance.

Despite several of our friends and co-workers placing side bets amongst themselves for who might kick who’s butt, we are not fighting in an effort to win. This is an exhibition. We are all showcasing the skills that we have learned under the guidance of John Drake, Jab City Boxing and Drake’s Downtown Gym over the past three months. Thank goodness, because I know Shanon could kick my butt!

In addition to learning a new sport, the coolest part about Dayton “Knockout” has been the historical aspect. Most people don’t know that Dayton was once known as one of the most famous boxing towns in the Midwest, or that in the first half of last century, Memorial Hall hosted matches featuring boxing greats like world heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey. The last official boxing match held at Memorial Hall was in the 1940s, but 2012 will breathe new life into Dayton’s boxing legacy.

It is truly an honor to be one of 16 Dayton “VIPs” to take the ring on Saturday night and have the opportunity to relive history. There will be 8 fights in total for the main event, each with three 60 seconds bouts. After the main event, guests and fighters will head downstairs to the basement of Memorial Hall for a Prohibition themed “Speak Easy Lounge” after-party featuring local band Funky G and The Groove Machine. We’re taking a trip back in time for an unforgettable and historic night on the town.

This is undoubtedly the coolest thing I’ve ever done, and one of the most unique events you could ever attend! Make sure you come downtown for Dayton “Knockout” to watch local VIPs go toe to toe, support two fantastic causes and experience the newest and most unique fundraiser in town.

With the ability to seat nearly 2500 people at Memorial Hall, we are hoping for a sell-out crowd. To learn more about the event, the lineup of VIPs fighters or to purchase tickets, visit www.daytonknockout.com. Pre-sale tickets are $15 for general admission or a special $25 ticket includes admission and three drinks. The night of the event, tickets will be $20 at the door. Pre-sale tickets can also be purchased at the Dayton office of ARC Ohio, Carillon Historical Park, Drake’s Downtown Gym, Lucky’s Taproom & Eatery, Brixx Ice Company, the Dublin Pub, Square One Salon & Spa and Ghostlight Coffee.

The Inaugural Dayton Knockout takes place this Saturday, February 25th at Memorial Hall. Doors will open at 7p.m. and the bouts will begin at 8p.m.. Don’t miss it!

Fun Things to Do Around Dayton This Month

By Maha Kashani

2012 is in full swing and January was packed with great adventures. I experienced the fantastic Norman Rockwell exhibit at the Dayton Art Institute where I heard the inspirational Ruby Bridges tell her story live. Then, the Jersey Boys Broadway show blew me away. I have been singing “Oh, what a night” ever since! Don’t fret if you missed out last month, both the Norman Rockwell Exhibit and Jersey Boys are running through Feb 5th!

Although February is a month of cold weather and hyper-awareness of being single (shout out to those of us celebrating Singles Appreciation Day on the 14th!), don’t worry. There are some great options to warm us up, keep us entertained and help us cross paths with new friends this month.

Did you know? The road to the NCAA March Madness Final Four begins in Dayton! This year introduces the “Big Hoopla” kicking off on Selection Sunday with multiple festivities attracting national media attention, pumping millions of dollars into our local economy and securing Dayton on the map as one of the premium host cities for college basketball’s favorite time of the year. Make sure to mark your calendars for Selection Sunday on March 11th and purchase your 4-game ticket package to ensure you don’t miss any of the action! www.DaytonHoopla.com.

Miss Maha’s “Best Bets” to

— Explore the City:

First Friday, Friday the 3rd, 5pm – 10pm around Downtown Dayton.

The Downtown Dayton Partnership invites you to kick off every month with a bang by exploring downtown Dayton’s art galleries, retail shops and restaurants. A few notable highlights for February include: Amore, the uber-chic new consignment store located at the Color of Energy Gallery on Brown St. A grand opening party for Basho Apparel, one of the newest Activated Spaces located at 521 E. 5th St. The “matters of the art” collection at Century Bar, downtown’s new Bourbon House, featuring 15 local artists’ works themed around Valentine’s Day. Once you’re thirsty, stop by Sidebar 410 for a handcrafted cocktail or Lucky’s Taproom for ice-cold craft beer on tap to cap off a memorable night on the town. www.DowntownDayton.org. Cost: free.

— Meet young professionals:

Jump into Encore Thursday at The Phil, Thursday the 9th, 5:30pm – 10pm kicking off at Uno’s Chicago Grill.

The Dayton Philharmonic’s new Encore Evenings program for young professionals teams up with jumpstART and Generation Dayton to celebrate the Music of Pink Floyd. The evening kicks off with a pre-concert party featuring free appetizers and a live WTUE radio remote at Uno’s before migrating to the Schuster Center for an exclusive backstage tour of the magnificent Mead Theatre. After the tour, guests will enjoy the Music of Pink Floyd from their premium Loge seat. This is truly an evening you’ll never forget. www.DaytonPhilharmonic.com/Encore. COST: Young Professionals ticket price – $30.

— Experience an infamous Fish Fry:

Dayton’s Fish Fry Season, Various dates/locations around the Miami Valley.

Fish Fry season is always a winter favorite for Daytonians. Friends and neighbors look forward to noshing on crispy fish and chips, sipping on ice cold brews, gambling Monte Carlo style and the endless opportunities to win raffles, silent auction items, door prizes and more. Many venues even host live musical entertainment while guests enjoy an affordable and family-friendly night out. Although there is no single website that lists the multitude of Fish Fries around town, just Google “Dayton Fish Fry” to learn about all the great options! Cost: Typically ranging from canned food donations to $15/person.

— Give back and have a blast:

Day of Caring Brunch, Sunday the 26th, multiple locations around the Miami Valley.

Every year, local organizations from around our community volunteer to host a brunch to bring awareness to the challenges faced by the homeless and hungry. This year, I am very proud to announce that the Dayton Arab-American Forum (DAAF) will be hosting a traditional Middle Eastern style Brunch at the Miami Valley School at 5151 Denise Drive in Kettering from 11am – 1:30pm. Stop by and I’ll be happy to serve you some of my favorite eats! To purchase tickets or learn more about DAAF’s special Day of Caring brunch, email: DAAFCares@gmail.com. Cost: $6.

Miss Maha’s “Can’t Miss it” pick of the month:

Inaugural Dayton “Knockout,” Saturday the 25th, 8pm at the Historic Memorial Hall.

Have you ever been punched in the face? I have! Don’t be alarmed, I’m taking jabs for charity. If there is one thing that Dayton non-profit organizations do well, it’s unique fundraising events. This one takes the cake. Dayton “Knockout” is a recreation of the Historic early-1900s Fight Night boxing matches that took place at Memorial Hall. Dayton’s “V.I.P.s,” yours truly included (don’t ask how I fell in this category), will go head to head duking it out in the ring for this live Fight Night boxing match to benefit the Aids Resource Center of Ohio and Dayton History. This is local entertainment at its finest. You really can’t miss it!

www.DaytonKnockout.com. Cost: Tickets starting at $15 in advance, $20 at the door.

Can you believe this is my first anniversary of MMATC? Wow, time flies! As I look back on the past 12 months, it has been such a neat experience digging deeper into the robust arts, culture and entertainment options that our wonderful community has to offer. I’ve loved sharing them with you and very much appreciate all of my fantastic and loyal readers.

With vacations, holidays and scorching hot weather, July is always the first month that really feels like summer for me. There are so many things to do, I wish I could write about them all, but alas I have to stick within my word count. That being said, here are my top picks for you to stay entertained in July.

Did you know? The United Irish of Dayton is generating a lot of buzz around their 10th Anniversary Dayton Celtic Festival. In addition to the festival, which is my “can’t miss it” pick of the month, there is a “Celtic Crush Party” on Tuesday, July 5 from 5 to 10 p.m. at Flanagan’s Pub. For all you Celtic Festival fanatics out there, you can enjoy a preview of the festival with great eats, a few pints and special announcements about 2011 festival happenings. Plus, 20 percent of your tab will be donated back to the Festival if you write “Dayton Celtic Festival” on your bill. Sláinte! Visit www.unitedirishofdayton.org/Festival/celticcrush for more information

Miss Maha’s “Best Bets” to:

Celebrate the 4th of July
The 38th Annual Americana Festival – Monday, July 4, All Day in the heart of Centerville (48 & 725). Growing up in Washington Township, I always looked forward to the Americana Festival. Starting in the heart of Centerville, festivities will include a 5K run, pancake breakfast, mile-long parade, huge street fair with over 300 vendors, live entertainment, classic car/truck show with over 150 vehicles, free childrens activities in Benham’s Grove and a spectacular fireworks display at Centerville High School starting at 10 p.m. It can be a long, but extremely fun way to spend your Independence Day. www.AmericanaFestival.org, Cost: FREE.

Experience Downtown Dayton
Dayton Blues Festival – July 18, 1 – 9 p.m. at Dave Hall Plaza Park located behind the Crowne Plaza. As part of the 2011 Summer Music Series, Blues Fest has always been a fan favorite. This year’s festival will feature eight different performance sets by both local and national blues artists. With music inspired by the Deep South in jazz, rhythm and blues, and rock ‘n’ roll form, you can’t go wrong. Dave Hall Plaza Park is an intimidate venue and the perfect location to have fun in the sun for a relaxing Saturday downtown while enjoying the Blues. www.DowntownDayton.org, Cost: FREE

Enjoy Arts, Culture and a Movie
Cool Films Series presents ‘West Side Story’ – July 1-3, 7:30 p.m. Friday/Saturday, 3 p.m. Sunday at the Victoria Theatre. Now THIS is an awesome concept. Every summer, the Victoria Theatre Association brings the silver screen to center stage playing a different movie each weekend in July and August. Yes, you can enjoy Hollywood and modern classics in our own historic and beautiful Victoria Theatre right downtown. West Side Story (1961) is set to kick off the season and is sure to be a hit. Free popcorn and sodas are available in the lobby, plus you can enjoy Latin dancing in front of the Victoria Theatre 30 minutes before Friday night’s show. Talk about a cool way to catch a fun flick. www.VictoriaTheatre.com, Cost: Individual tickets: $5, 10-ticket passbook: $28

Meet young professionals
Generation Dayton’s 4th Friday Lunch featuring John North, President & CEO of the Better Business Bureau – Friday, July 22, 12 – 1:30 p.m. at MCL Cafeteria in Kettering. “Communicating Across Generations” is the topic for July’s Speaker Series lunch and I can’t think of a better presenter than Mr. North himself. Earning the title of President and CEO before turning 30 is quite the accomplishment, so John truly understands the importance of properly communicating across generations, both personally and professionally. This is a hot topic these days when it comes to professional development, so don’t miss this opportunity to learn from the best. Lunch provided with RSVP. Limited space, so don’t delay. www.GenerationDayton.org, Cost: FREE

Miss Maha’s
“Can’t miss it” pick of the month
10th Annual Dayton Celtic Festival – July 29-31 at Riverscape MetroPark. The Dayton Celtic Festival is one of my top five favorite festivals around the region. This year marks the United Irish of Dayton’s 10th year of celebrating all things Celtic. Riverscape will be flooded with the sights, sounds, and tastes of Celtic heritage and tradition for this fun-filled weekend on the river. With traditional food, beverages, live music and entertainment, plus children’s activities and merchandise vendors offering authentic imports from Ireland, Scotland and Great Britain, you can’t go wrong. www.UnitedIrishofDayton.org/Festival Cost: FREE

With summer officially in full swing, I’m looking forward to taking advantage of all the activities and festivals happening around town. Hope to see you out and about enjoying all these fun things that Dayton has to offer. As always, find me on Facebook: www.Facebook.com/MMATC and follow me on Twitter: @MissMaha. Khoodafez!
