Is it summer yet? What ever happened to actually having four seasons? I miss those days. Now it seems as though fall and spring just mesh into winter. But, why am I complaining? Brighter days are right around the corner and Sunday Funday at the pool is so close, I can smell it!

In addition to showers, April brought about many fun experiences. As we move into May, I do recommend you stop to smell the flowers, but don’t let them distract you from these other great opportunities to explore our city.

Miss Maha’s “Can’t miss it” pick of the month

GreenFest at Urban Nights – Friday, May 11 from 5-10 p.m. at Riverscape MetroPark, 111 E. Monument Ave.

Everyone knows Urban Nights is one of the coolest city-wide block parties in America. No, seriously. With hundreds of options, deciding what to do during Urban Nights can be overwhelming. Take my advice, head to Riverscape and celebrate all things green. This special interactive exhibit of Urban Nights, dubbed “Green Street,” is devoted to educating on green practices, promoting green businesses and having green fun. Hosted by the Dayton Regional Green 3 (DRG3) initiative, Green Street will feature energy generating bicycles, vertical bungee jumping, cornhole tournaments, green demonstrations, games, crafts, recycling opportunities and more. If your business is interested in going green, then check out the DRG3 educational sessions at the Dayton Engineers Club starting at 2 p.m. DaytonGreenFest.com | downtownDayton.org Cost: FREE

Did you know?

Dayton has a new intramurals club! The Dayton Sport and Social Club is a new organization created to provide anyone 21 and older the opportunity to participate in co-ed recreational sports around the region. Featuring three competitive levels: “Majors,” “Minors” and “For Fun,” spanning options such as softball, bowling, volleyball, dodgeball, cornhole, ultimate frisbee, basketball and golf, there is something for everyone! The attitude is “Fun First, Win Second,” with the leagues focused on players getting out and having fun while making new friends. To learn more, visit DaytonSSC.com.

Explore the City:

Go w/ the Flow Yoga – Tuesday, May 14 at 6 p.m. at Riverscape Metropark, 111 E. Monument Ave.

Ben Rivet and Tori Reynolds, creators of the unique Go w/ the Flow yoga and live music collaboration classes, have been traveling from coast to coast hosting GWTF classes all year. Before taking off on their national tour last spring, they decided to host one last class along the river to kick off Bike to Work Week. To everyone’s amazement, almost 250 yogis arrived on bike, mats in hand, for what became one of the largest yoga classes Dayton has ever seen. This year, they’re back and ready to break last year’s record. With a powerful but fun Vinyasa sequence lead by Tori and accompanied by Ben’s acoustic guitar, vocals and beatboxing, this one-of-a-kind yoga experience on the river is one you don’t want to miss. Remember, bring your own mat! gowtheflow.org Cost: FREE

Experience World Cultures:

A World A’Fair – May 17-19 at the Dayton Convention Center, 22 E. Fifth St.

Take a trip around the world for a celebration of global diversity featuring authentic food, entertainment, exhibits, music and cultural displays during the 40th Annual Dayton International Festival. This year’s “Global Pastimes” theme showcases the pastimes enjoyed by various ethnic backgrounds and cultures such as The Philippines, Netherlands, Lebanon, Turkey, Ireland, Hungary, Puerto Rico, Italy, Norway and Ethiopia, to name a few. In addition to all the delicious food, my favorite part of this festival is the exciting live performances. From the Burundian drummers to Kenyan safari acrobats to Madam Gigi’s Outrageous French Cancan Dancers, the featured entertainment will blow you away. aworldafair.org Cost (at the door): Adults $7, Seniors $5, Youth (6-18) $4

Get Involved:

“Dayton Decides” – Saturday May 4, 6-11 p.m. at Brixx Ice Co., 500 E. First St.

It’s been 20 years since Dayton’s Mayoral and Commission races have both been taken to the primary election. As a result, UpDayton’s advocacy committee wants to ensure that young professionals and residents can make an educated decision when they hit the polls to vote on May 7. This special “Rock the Vote” themed evening will feature live music, presentations from each mayoral candidate, special election themed draught beers and an opportunity to mix ‘n’ mingle with candidates and fellow citizens interested in making an impact in our community. updayton.com Cost: FREE

With longer days and warmer weather around the corner, there is no excuse not to get out and enjoy all the exciting amenities our community has to offer. This is just the tip of the iceberg.
March is almost over and the big milestone of turning 3-0 comes this Sunday. Sigh. It will be hard letting my carefree 20s go … and accepting that “turning 30” means I have to be an “adult” (by the way, why is it called turning 30? It’s not like I’m going sour!) This dark moment is looming on the near horizon, but thankfully the full docket of exciting events in April has me completely distracted.

As they say, April showers bring May flowers, but don’t let a little rain keep you indoors! Check out some of these fun ways you can get involved and stay entertained this month.

Did you know?

Following the show, all ENCORE guests are invited to a post-show cast party at the Dayton Racquet Club! Now this is what I call a perfect night on the town. DaytonPerformingArts.org/Encore/Figaro Cost: $30 with ENCORE Code: wedding

This high energy musical featuring the “practically perfect in every way” iconic nanny Mary Poppins, has been called “a roof-raising, toe tapping, high-flying extravaganza” by the New York Daily News. Featuring all those unforgettable songs, spectacular stage-craft and awe-inspiring dance numbers, “Mary Poppins” at the Schuster will be a family friendly spectacle you do not want to miss! VictoriaTheatre.com/shows/mary-poppins Cost: Tickets starting at $42

Meet Young Professionals:

By Maha Kashani

Photo: Dayton’s ENCORE young professionals group hosts a special outing to the Philharmonic’s Russian Masters concert on March 15; photo credit: Mikee Huber

Another month bites the dust, and we are moving right along with our year of appreciating all things Dayton! February played host to several fun events such as Dancing with Dayton’s Stars, Casablanca at the Dayton Philharmonic, the Dayton Arab American Forum’s Day of Caring Middle Eastern Brunch and FilmDayton’s Dessert with Oscar.

If you missed out on the fun in February, don’t sweat it. Not only does March bring the Iranian New Year – Nowroz, aka the first day of spring – but also a ton of excitement for all Daytonians to experience! I’d even venture to call it “The Best Month Ever!” Well, with the exception of turning 30 on March 31 … But, I guess you’d call that a personal problem? EEK!

Did you know?

The Benjamin and Marion Schuster Performing Arts Center celebrates its 10-year anniversary on March 1st! If you have never been to the Schuster, then you have yet to experience one of the most amazing assets that downtown Dayton has to offer. At the heart, there is the stunning Mead Theatre, a 2,300 seat state-of-the-art facility that pays homage to Dayton’s aviation history featuring a striking Starfield as an exact replica of the star pattern the Wright Brother’s saw the night before their first flight. Plus, the width of the Starfield is that of the Wright Flyer’s wingspan and the theatre’s height is the exact distance of the Wright’s first successful flight. Pretty cool, huh? There is also the Mathile Theatre for intimate performances and the dazzling Kettering Wintergarden, a six-story glass atrium, used for special events. The Schuster truly makes downtown shine! Check out their Open House on March 2 from 1-6 p.m. for children’s activities, information about upcoming performances, special tours and more. Can’t make the open house? Celebrate the 10-year anniversary all year long with many other special events and discounts found at schustercenter.org/schuster-anniversary.

I am happy to announce that you won’t find me in the ring this year for the VIP Fight Night boxing match! I had a blast training last year, but fighting my best friend with over a thousand people watching is something I never want to do again. That being said, everyone who attended told me it was one of their most exciting nights in Dayton. This re-creation of a “Fight Night,” just as Memorial Hall used to host back in the roaring ‘20s, will be a special treat! Doors open at 6:30 p.m., Bouts start at 8 p.m. KnockoutDayton.com Cost: $15 in advance, $20 at the door.

Experience Arts & Culture:

ENCORE at the Phil: Russian Masters – Friday, March 15, 5:30 p.m. at the Dayton Racquet Club, 40 N. Main St., and the Schuster Center, 2 W. Second St.

What is it about Russian classical music that is so powerful and intriguing? Join ENCORE young professionals as we find out during this exclusive opportunity to celebrate Dayton’s rich cultural arts heritage at Russian Masters. We kick off the evening at the Dayton Racquet Club’s 29 Stories lounge for drinks, complimentary appetizers and fun door prizes, then head to the Schuster Center for a VIP backstage tour and on-stage photo opportunity, after which we will be ushered to our premium “A” tier seats to enjoy the show. Works by Glinka, Shostakovich and Rachmaninoff, plus a riveting solo by DPO Concertmaster Jessica Hung, will make this hot-blooded musical event one to remember. To learn more or purchase your discount tickets, visit DaytonPerformingArts.org/encore/russianmasters. Cost: $20/ticket ENCORE promo code: Jessica

Commemorate Dayton’s History:

“The Great 1913 Flood Exhibit” – beginning Saturday, March 23 at Carillon Park, 1000 Carillon Blvd.

March 25 marks the 100-year anniversary of the Great Dayton Flood of 1913. Still holding the record as Ohio’s worst natural disaster in history. The Great Flood destroyed our city, then brought citizens together to redefine who we were and secure our future. Visit Carillon Park for this new exhibit to commemorate the catastrophe that washed most of downtown Dayton away and the innovation still in place keeping us safe today. Also, make sure to pick up the March 19 edition of the Dayton City Paper for the special 1913 Flood insert. It’s guaranteed to be a collector’s item. daytonhistory.org

Miss Maha’s “Can’t miss it” pick of the month

St Patrick’s Day in the City

Sunday, March 17 in the Historic Oregon District and University of Dayton

Erin go Bragh! Every year on St. Patrick’s Day, the masses turn Irish and the city becomes the destination of choice for everyone around the region. If you have never been to Dublin Pub in the Oregon District or Flanagan’s by UD for St. Patrick’s Day, then you have yet to experience how exciting paying homage to this patron saint can be! Both venues will host outdoor tents and feature live entertainment while keeping the beverages flowing all day long. Make sure you prepare all your green flair and dress to impress for the festivities.

“Casablanca’s” story of love, passion and life has captivated moviegoers around the world for over 60 years. Make your Valentine’s Day one to remember with a romantic dinner on the town at one of the city’s amazing independent restaurants such as Roost, Jay’s Seafood, Franco’s or Thai 9, followed by this rare opportunity to experience one of the greatest films of all time made even better with the score performed by our Dayton Philharmonic. “Here’s looking at you, kid.” DaytonPerformingArts.org Cost: Tickets starting at $18

Give Back:

DAAF’s Day of Caring Middle Eastern Brunch, Sunday Feb. 24 from noon – 3 p.m. at the Miami Valley School, 5151 Denise Dr. in Kettering

In 1991, Jan Venkayya had a vision to raise awareness and confront the ever-increasing challenge of hunger and homelessness. Now, over 20 years later, that vision has turned into one of the most popular fundraisers in town. Although most sites serve pancakes, the Dayton Arab American Forum (DAAF) is staying true to our roots and serving a traditional Middle Eastern-style brunch. Last year was a huge success, and we are excited to be back again in 2013. Yours truly will be volunteering all day long, so please stop by. I’d love to serve you an authentic plate featuring delicious items like tabbouli, hummus, baba ghanouj, fatayer and of course, baklava! To purchase tickets for DAAF’s special Day of Caring brunch, email DAAFCares@gmail.com. Cost: $6

Know why beans just got even better?

By Michael Roizen, M.D., and Mehmet Oz, M.D.

As if there weren’t already loads to love about beans, these tasty and oh-so-satisfying legumes are looking even more appealing thanks to a headline-grabbing new report. Eating beans regularly knocks down high blood sugar, lowers blood pressure and cuts the risk of heart disease by a respectable eight percent. A healthy boost for more than 100 million North Americans who have diabetes, prediabetes or a related health risk called metabolic syndrome. (Other legumes, like peanuts and green beans, are also good for you, but they’re not the beans we are talking about here.) Beans are high in protein and can help flatten your belly and reduce belly (omentum) fat – the toxin-filled flab that threatens your vital organs.

That’s a stellar payday from a versatile food you can serve cold as a salad, room temp as a party dip, warm as a comfort-food side dish, baked into muffins or piping hot as a hearty main dish!

Inside your favorite bean – whether it’s white, pink, red, black, pinto, lentil or garbanzo – is a squadron of powerful, health-boosting compounds. A half-cup of beans gives you six grams of satisfying fiber: two grams of blood sugar-lowering soluble fiber and four grams of colon-cleansing insoluble fiber. But that’s just the beginning. Beans are a starchy food, but the type of starch they contain digests v-e-r-y slowly. They have a low glycemic index, which keeps blood sugar lower and steadier than faster-digesting carbohydrates like refined flour in pasta or bread. In fact, 10-20 percent of the starch in beans never gets digested at all!

Beans are a great source of the blood pressure-controlling minerals potassium and magnesium. They’re also packed with chemicals called phenols that protect cells throughout your body from oxidative damage, which helps explain the mighty bean’s reputation for lowering risk for some forms of cancer and reducing odds for heart disease. Getting into the bean habit also can cool off chronic, bodywide inflammation – another way they help lower your odds for diabetes, heart disease, cancer and more.

“But how many beans do I have to put on my plate … and how do I deal with the, er, side effects?”

Glad you asked. One cup of beans a day delivers their health benefits, and rinsing them thoroughly (either after you soak dried beans or when you take them out of the can) removes gas-generating sugars. (Dr. Mike suggests putting Bean-O in the water you soak dried beans in!) Still rumbling? You can take Bean-O by mouth before you eat beans; that’ll break down starches in your gut before gas-producing bacteria do it for you. So now you’re ready to up your bean intake.

Beans at breakfast. Have beans instead of toast with your eggs. Add a little hot sauce, guacamole and fat-free sour cream for a Tex-Mex morning treat.

Take beans to the party. Mix black beans with corn kernels, chopped tomato, pepper, lime juice, olive oil and seasonings for a hearty salsa. Toss cooked white beans with olive oil and seasonings for a great dip. Create homemade hummus, a Middle Eastern spread with chickpeas, tahini and other ingredients. Check
www.realage.com for recipes.

Bake with beans. Trendy, gluten-free bean flour adds flavor, protein and tenderness to muffins, quick breads, even cakes. White bean and chickpea flour also work well in baking. Black-bean flour is terrific as a thickener in sauces.

Serve a new comfort food. Warm beans seasoned with your favorite spices and a dab of oil are a great replacement for mashed potatoes. Serve skinless, herbed chicken, grilled salmon, or shrimp skewers on a bed of white beans flavored with rosemary, garlic and a dash of olive oil.

Try a meatless or nearly meatless bean entree. Three-bean chili, lentil burgers, bean soups and stews – there are plenty of ways to harness the satisfaction of beans in a meatless meal. Or add a little meat, like lean pork or chicken; you don’t need a lot with this versatile all-star on board.

Kick off 2013 by getting out around Dayton

By Maha Kashani

HAPPY NEW YEAR! The holidays are officially over and as you are reading, I am en route to Dayton from a two-week voyage to visit my family in Iran and after 14 days in the motherland, I can promise you that I am excited to come home!

The New Year is a time to reflect on the changes we want and make a fresh start. Many commit to losing weight, working harder, drinking less, exercising more, finding a significant other (yep, I’m calling the kettle black), relaxing more, etc. Instead of committing to, and then giving up on, the same old resolution year-after-year, why not declare a cool and creative resolution that will be full of unexpected surprises?

I’m talking about a resolution to love Dayton. I know we aren’t in a big city like Chicago, nor are we surrounded by mountains like Denver, but Dayton is a unique gem in its own right. As we move into a new year, I challenge you to shatter any pre-conceived notions and commit to looking at our community with a fresh set of eyes. Don’t worry, I’ll be here every month to help you along the way and I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Did you know?

The Road to March Madness will continue to begin in Dayton through 2015! The NCAA announced that the University of Dayton has won yet another two year bid to continue hosting the First Four, although you shouldn’t be too surprised. This community’s strong commitment to supporting college basketball at a national level started in 2001. Since then, UD Arena has done a spectacular job of kicking-off America’s favorite basketball tournament every year. In addition to the sold-out First Four games in 2013, Dayton will also play host to the second and third round games, bringing UD Arena to a milestone of having hosted over 100 NCAA tournament games. Pretty cool! Make sure to mark your calendars for the First Four Festival on Selection Sunday, March 17 (St. Patrick’s Day) in the Oregon District.

Miss Maha’s “Best Bets” to:

Explore Downtown Dayton:

First Friday, Jan. 4 from 5 -10 p.m. around downtown Dayton

One of the best ways to love Dayton is to live Dayton. That means you have to spend time exploring Dayton and what better way than during the popular monthly hop known as First Friday? Most local retail stores and galleries stay open late offering complimentary cheese and wine, the restaurants and bars suggest delicious specials and the raw passion of the city can be felt all around. Weather dependent, entertainment options include pop-up street performances, a courteous mass group bicycle ride, art demonstrations, live music and more. There are endless ways to experience the First Friday of every month in the city, so I recommend downloading the Find It Downtown mobile tool for a complete listing of arts and cultural amenities, as well as a dining guide, retail store, parking map and much more.
mobile.downtowndayton.org

Experience Arts and Culture:

“Shrek The Musical,” Jan. 15-27 at the Victoria Theatre, 138 N. Main St.

“Shrek,” one of America’s favorite Dreamworks movies, takes the Victoria Theatre by storm – Broadway style! This Oscar-winning animated fairy tale transforms from screen to stage as a grumpy ogre falls in love with a feisty princess in a faraway kingdom. Throw in a donkey who won’t shut up, a villain with a short temper, a dozen other fairy tale misfits and you’ve got a hilarious evening of fun for everyone.

www.TicketCenterStage.com

Cost: Tickets starting at $15 (plus service fee)

Satisfy your sweet tooth:

Sweet Treats Festival, Sunday, Jan. 27,1-4 p.m at Commander Aero, 10570 Springboro Pike in Miamisburg

Celebrate all things confectionary at the inaugural Sweet Treats Festival! Sugar lovers are invited to spend a whole Sunday afternoon satisfying their sweet tooth during this delicious showcase of fresh and local cupcakes, candies and cookies from all around the region. Show your support for the area’s top bakeries, chocolatiers and pastry artisans by indulging in this festive sample-happy environment. Plus, a portion of the proceeds benefits A Kid Again. Now that is sweet.

www.sweettreatsfestival.com

Cost: $25 in advance.

I promise I’ll make it fun and easy to stay with your “learn to love Dayton” New Year’s resolution! Remember to “Like” me on Facebook (www.Facebook.com/MMATC), “Follow” me on Twitter (@MissMaha) and I’ll keep you up to date. Salute!

ENCORE! Music of The Doors Saturday, Jan. 19 at Uno’s and the Schuster Center in downtown Dayton

It is my pleasure to personally invite you to join us for an ENCORE! evening celebrating Jim Morrison and the Music of The Doors. We’ll start the evening at Uno’s with complimentary appetizers and a live radio remote by 102.9 WTUE as we get ready to cut loose on some of the most popular tunes The Doors ever recorded. Then, head on over to the Schuster Center for an exclusive backstage tour and photo opportunity with the musicians. Finally, we’ll take our premium seats as the musicians take the stage and rock an epic song list, accompanied by our Dayton Philharmonic, featuring classics such as “Touch Me,” “20th Century Fox,” “Five to One,” “Break on Through” and “Riders on the Storm.” This will be an unforgettable evening of music that you do not want to miss! Hurry, limited tickets available.

Great ways to enjoy Dayton in December

By Maha Kashani

With the holidays upon us and everyone being pulled in every which direction, I’ve decided to put a new spin on the year-end edition of my column. Welcome to the inaugural “list” edition of Miss Maha and the City.

2013 is almost here! Before that ball drops, make sure you check out some of these fun options to explore “the City”.

Miss Maha’s “Best Bets” to…..

Enjoy Brunch:

One of the most anticipated activities of my weekend! Here are some fantastic options for you to enjoy this perfect tango between two of the day’s best meals:

Olive, an Urban Dive – Saturdays, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. If you’ve never had brunch at Olive, I can’t even begin to explain what you’re missing. From their locally-sourced daily strata to breakfast scramble to specials like pumpkin french toast casserole, Olive is a foodie’s dream come true! This is a BYOB establishment, so grab your favorite bottle of bubbly or bring some “zing” for a relaxing way to start your Saturday. olivedive.com

Lucky’s Taproom – Saturdays and Sundays, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Love omelets and Bloody Marys? Then Lucky’s is your spot! With a “build your own omelet” menu featuring over 30 toppings to choose from and a “build your own Bloody Mary” bar full of fixins, it feels like I’m in heaven every time I’m there! Not into omelets? Check out the delicious breakfast tacos or the daily special featuring options like butter rum pancakes. Yum! luckystaproom.com

Butter Cafe – Saturdays & Sundays from 7 a.m.- 3 p.m. For you early birds, Butter Cafe is ready and waiting to serve up mouthwatering options such as jelly donut pancakes or chai tea french toast at the crack of dawn! Using only the freshest organic and free-range ingredients, Butter is a choice you’ll never regret. Make sure to save room for one of their house-made desserts that change daily! buttercafe.com

Burn off Calories:

Go ahead! Treat yourself to seconds, or thirds … then pencil in one of these activities to help burn off those extra calories:

Ice Skating at Riverscape MetroPark – Every year, the ice rink at Riverscape sets the perfect winter wonderland scene in downtown Dayton for all to enjoy. No charge for ice time on weekdays, and only $7 (including skate rentals) on weekends. Checkout the calendar of activities such as lessons, themed skate nights, curling classes and more at metroparks.org.

Urban Krag Climbing Center – “The Krag,” located in the Oregon District, is one of the coolest places in the city. This former church features over 8,000 square feet of textured and sculpted vertical terrain with heights up to 56 ft., as well as an inclined bouldering wall. It’s the perfect venue to live fit and have fun whether you are a beginner or advanced climber. urbankrag.com

Practice Yoga on 5th – Have you heard of the “hot yoga” craze? In addition to traditional yoga classes, Practice on 5th turns up the heat (literally) for intense, yet accessible, yoga sessions such as Power Vinyasa and Slow Flow/Deep Release. These classes are suitable for all levels and guaranteed to make you sweat. practiceyogadayton.com

Drake’s Downtown Gym – This old school boxing gym located at 4th & Jefferson is quite the experience. At first I was intimidated, but quickly fell in love with Drake’s fun and inviting environment of circuit training, cardio and boxing for all skill levels. Gloves and wraps are available, but I recommend purchasing your own. jabcityboxing.biz

Buy Local:

Almost 70 cents of every dollar spent at a local business stays in the community, compared with only 43 cents when you shop at national/big box stores. Shop local to help support our economy and invest in our community:

American Pi – Located at the Shops at St. Clair Lofts, American π is a unique boutique specializing in gifts and accessories all made in America. Featuring products like handbags, greeting cards, candles, personal care and food items, this the perfect stop to find quality, distinct gifts this holiday season. americanpidayton.com

Sew Dayton – Downtown’s newest addition offers fun and high quality custom purses, clutches, dresses and skirts with vintage and retro flair. These handmade items make the perfect gift. Plus, being located inside Mike Elsass’ Color of Energy gallery with Amore Designer Consignment Boutique is a special treat for all visitors. sewdayton.com

Beaute Box – This eclectic, Paris chic, pampering boutique located on Fifth Street is the perfect escape from all the holiday madness. Whether you need a shellac manicure, relaxing massage or rejuvenating facial, Beaute Box has got you covered. beautebox.wix.com/beautebox

Peace on Fifth – This remarkable gift shop has a deep purpose: end human trafficking. Specializing in free trade products that use no slave labor, Peace on Fifth’s passion to bring modern-day slavery to an end is inspirational. You’ll find unique items that you can feel great about purchasing. peaceonfifth.com

Miss Maha’s “Can’t Miss It” pick of the month:

2012 Santa Pub Crawl, Saturday Dec. 8 in the Oregon District

December is stressful, so take advantage of this opportunity to meet new friends and blow off some much needed steam. This spirited tour of the Oregon District kicks off at Dublin Pub from 5:30-7 p.m., followed by Trolley Stop 7-8 p.m., Tumbleweed 8-9 p.m, Blind Bobs 9-10 p.m., Oregon Express 10-11 p.m., Ned Peppers 11p.m.-midnight, before arriving at the final destination – Pulse NiteClub. Bonus: No cover charge if you dress up as your favorite holiday character! I promise this will be an amazing night to remember. Cost: Bring a $10 unwrapped gift for Toys for Tots.

So much to do! What to learn more? “Like” me on Facebook (www.facebook.com/MMATC) and “Follow” me on Twitter (@MissMaha). Warmest wishes for a fabulous holiday season. Cheers!

By Maha Kashani

Can you believe the holidays are upon us? 2012 has delivered some fantastic memories of the last year of my 20s, and favorite new hashtag to commemorate the official countdown to turning 30 (Approximately 151 more days … but, who’s counting?) is #YOLO – You Only Live Once. So much power in those four little words!

October brought lots of excitement, especially with my favorite celebration of the year … Halloween! Masquerage did not disappoint, Dayton Music Fest was a huge success and boy, have I enjoyed those quadruple shot soy lattes in a variety of fantastic flavors from Ghostlight Coffee. Maybe even a little too much … but, hey – #YOLO!

As we move into the madness of the holidays, check out some of these fun ways to stay entertained.

Did you know? The Dayton Ballet, Opera and Philharmonic Orchestra have merged! Dayton is trailblazing, again. This time it’s with the newly formed Dayton Performing Arts Alliance. Garnering national attention, this exciting and innovative merger has moved Dayton’s cultural arts scene to front-and-center on the national stage. With exciting collaborations and new ticket packages spanning across each art form, you’ll want to make sure you check out a few performances this year. If you’ve never been to a show, then keep your eyes peeled for ENCORE! Thousands will gather downtown to experience one of Ohio’s largest tree lighting ceremonies known as the “Grande Illumination” featuring more than 100,000 lights that dazzle the night, followed by the family-friendly Dayton Holiday Festival Parade. Can’t make it on Nov. 23? Don’t worry, throughout the month of December you can experience Tike’s Shop and Wintergarden Wonderland Windows at the Schuster Center, a family movie series, pizza with Santa, a gorgeous holiday train display, noontime entertainment in downtown’s office buildings and much more in downtown Dayton.
By Maha Kashani

Wait, summer is almost over… already? I can’t believe how quick that went by! Even though we were lucky enough to skip spring and jump right into 80-degree weather starting in March this year, I can still never get enough summertime…

Some say Labor Day is the official/unofficial end of summer. I say, “Let the good times roll in September with these fun ways to stay entertained.”

Did you know? Dayton is officially home to the largest indoor entertainment center in the nation! Scene75 opened its doors this summer offering fun loving Daytonians a special entertainment experience right in our backyard. In addition to a 150-seat restaurant named “Radar’s,” the facility features two bars, Ohio’s longest go-kart tracks, bumper cars, black-light mini-golf, mini-bowling, an arcade, 4-D theatre, laser tag, sand volleyball courts, bocce ball courts, large outdoor patio and more. It is truly fun for all ages facility, although it becomes 21 and up on Friday and Saturday nights. This exciting new addition to our community is something you must check out! www.Scene75.com

Miss Maha’s “Best Bets” to…

Explore Downtown Dayton:

Urban Nights Friday, Sept. 14 all around downtown Dayton

Don’t make it to the city often? Then Urban Nights is your best bet to experience what downtown Dayton is all about. Over 100 venues will be set up around town offering a taste of the unique arts, dining, shopping, music, housing and interactive experiences that our urban core has to offer. I recommend joining the crowd at Courthouse Square to cheer on the Over The Edge rappellers descending down the 27-story KeyBank Tower as a fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters. After living vicariously through those daredevils, make your way to RiverScape for Taste of the Miami Valley and enjoy some delicious local restaurant samples. Once you’ve sampled your heart out, head to the Oregon District or Wright Dunbar District for dinner and a cold one with good friends. Remember to take your time and enjoy all the great entertainment along the way.

Cost: FREE! Visit www.DowntownDayton.org and download your interactive map to ensure you don’t miss out on all the fun.

Enjoy a Fall Festival

OktoberFest, Sept. 21-23 at the Dayton Art Institute

Quite possibly my favorite festival in Dayton, the 41st anniversary of Dayton’s Oktoberfest is guaranteed to be a great time. As if the extensive beer and wine selection weren’t enough, Oktoberfest offers so much more. Grab your friends and family and head to the Dayton Art Institute for live entertainment, delicious eats from around the world, local/regional/international artisans displaying beautiful works, a homebrewing contest and even children’s activities. What about football, you ask? Catch all the action on the four big-screen TVs in the craft beer tent. If you’ve got the cash, I recommend checking out Friday night’s Preview Party featuring unlimited beer and wine. Have Lederhosen? Feel free to dress to theme and don’t forget to pick up one of the famous souvenir mugs on your way out.

COST: Friday’s Preview Party $60 pre-sale, $80 at the door and General Admission $5 pre-sale, $7 at the door. www.DaytonArtInstitute.com

Experience the Arts

Encore at the Phil, Saturday, Sept. 29 starting at 5:30 p.m. at The Wine Gallery.

Encore is back! Yours truly, along with my co-host Lauren Hamer, are excited to introduce young professionals to Dayton’s world-class performing arts in a unique way with the second season of the Encore program. Help us kick off this season with the stunning Cirque Musica! Our special Encore evening will begin at The Wine Gallery on Monument for beverages and light appetizers before heading to the Schuster Center for a VIP backstage tour. Once the tour ends, we will be escorted to our seats for a journey of dazzling beauty blending with the thrills of the world’s greatest circus performers, all accompanied by our sensational Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. This full sensory experience, featuring music from Tchaikovsky to the Beatles, will leave you in awe. Guaranteed to be an evening you’ll never forget! COST: $25 www.DaytonPhilharmonic.com/encore

Miss Maha’s “Can’t Miss it” pick of the month

Downtown Dayton Revival Music Festival Sept. 8-9

Without a doubt, the most anticipated event of the year is the Downtown Dayton Revival. Think Lollapalooza, on a smaller scale, along the river in downtown Dayton. An estimated 40,000 people will flock to the city for this two-day music celebration featuring a spectacular lineup, including headliners Train and Grammy Award-winner John Legend, as well as hometown favorites like The Ohio Players, Guided by Voices and many more. 37 bands. 3 stages. 2 days. Don’t miss it! COST: $75 for a weekend pass. www.downtownrevival.com

BY MICHAEL ROIZEN, M.D., AND MEHMET OZ, M.D.

We’re big fans of health apps, those clever little programs that convert your smartphone or tablet into a stress reliever, workout buddy, healthy eating log, even a personal assistant that tracks your blood pressure, blood sugar, vision, sleep and a lot more. But with 40,000-plus to choose from, how do you know where to start?

Good question. App stores don’t have authoritative medical reviewers — yet — to make sure health apps live up to their claims. And apps are big business ($1.4 billion by the end of this year!), and that means big hype.

Fortunately, researchers are starting to study health-related apps; a medical journal devoted to mHealth (that’s “mobile health”!) just started up. And you may have seen the recent headlines about the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s interest in putting medical-app developers through the same approval process as medical devices (pacemakers and coronary stents, for example).

But for now, we’re going to try to help you make the best choices. Start your hunt with these mSmart (short for “mobile smart”) strategies. Then take some of our favorite apps for a test drive.

No. 1: Set your health goal, then look for an app to help you. The best apps complement the work you do every day to stay healthy. Like your sneakers or the veggie steamer in your kitchen cabinet, an app can’t do the work for you; they’re tools. So start with a goal in mind. Maybe you want to keep track of your weekly walking totals (how many steps? 10,000 a day!), or would you rather count your daily servings of fruit and veggies? Then look for an app that can help.

No. 2: Don’t believe the hype. Immediate weight loss! End that 20-year smoking habit today! If an app promises to deliver results that sound too good to be true, they probably are. Don’t waste your time and money.

No. 3: Read users’ reviews. Let other app lovers give you valuable clues about whether a program delivers. PCworld.com and the American Dietetic Association (eatright.org/appreviews/) can give you good insights; and the Apple, Blackberry and Android marketplaces offer interesting user-generated reviews. For the truly motivated: Find the developer’s name in the app store or company website, then check if it has designed other apps. Did it work with experts on this one?

No. 4: Test-drive a couple. No app suits everybody. We suspect that maybe as many as 30 percent of people who try any one app stick with it. So plan on test-driving a couple. Since many are free and many more cost less than a dollar to download, this won’t break your budget. The right app for you should be easy and convenient to use, and should deliver promised results.

Five Free Apps We Love

Wondering what we like? Start with these:

S.O.S. This free app for Android phones, developed by one of us (Dr. Oz) with the American Red Cross and Sharecare, gives you step-by-step instructions for dealing with a variety of emergencies, including choking, broken bones, strokes and allergic reactions.

Go! To Sleep. This unique app — from Dr. Mike’s Cleveland Clinic — reveals your personal “sleep score,” rating the quality of your sleep and showing you how caffeine, alcohol, exercise, relaxation and other factors help or hurt your slumber.

MyQuitLine. This one offers expert advice and connects you — by phone or by live help — with a trained quitting-smoking counselor at the National Cancer Institute Quitline.

Glucose Buddy. This app lets people with diabetes track blood sugar levels and A1Cs, and creates graphs showing blood sugar levels over time and printouts for your doc. It also can track your diet, exercise routines and medications.

Calorie Counter by FatSecret. This four-star-rated food and diet app uses your daily calorie goal to help you set up healthy meal plans. You can keep track of what you eat and your exercise routines, and it lets you compare what works and what doesn’t with other users.

Mehmet Oz, M.D. is host of “The Dr. Oz Show,” and Mike Roizen, M.D. is Chief Medical Officer at the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute. For more information go to www.RealAge.com.
